The original EverTheNomad blog was born in 2008 and lived happily until early 2014. It had a rich and exciting life, which featured fun series like guest posts from expats writing about their adopted homes (from Santiago to Gabon), an interview series called Local Voices Croatia and Global Glimpses that showcased snapshots and mini-stories from my travels. It supported several Passports with Purpose fundraisers, brought me many friends I still keep in touch with and provided a platform for writing whatever and however I pleased. It lives on in these pages. Please poke around.
On my first day in Costa Rica, I spent the afternoon in Manuel Antonio National Park, a small but beautiful tract of rainforest, mangrove and beach that hugs the country's central Pacific coast. In just a couple of hours of walking around with a guide super-skillful in catching the slightest movement of the tree branches,...
Today marks a milestone in my travel writer’s life. After seven and a half years of working out of my living room (when not on the road), I just became a member of the Brooklyn Writers Space and got myself a cubicle. My very own space to write! I've blogged about the extremes of travel...
There's nothing better than a stroll through its food markets to get to know a city's everyday rhythms. So on my one and only day in Quito, a definite highlight was the wander around Mercado Iñaquito in the north of Ecuador's capital. I loved the dizzying variety of corn – from morocho to mais morado...
Thought I'd share news of a travel survey currently on offer by HostelBookers, which offers a chance for you to win a £3000 RTW travel ticket! Here are the details: Feel like taking some time out from the nine-to-five to indulge in a round-the-world adventure? Well, if Julia Roberts could do it, so can you!...
I’ve been back from the Galapagos for a week now and still can’t shake off the thoughts of this pristine archipelago in the eastern Pacific. Friends have been asking me about the trip, what it was like out there. The other day I was explaining the Darwin connection to a friend, and how the Galapagos...
In this week's (sponsored) guest post, we take a wander around Rome's piazzas. A TOUR OF ROME'S PIAZZAS All roads may lead to Rome but to be more precise, all roads lead to a piazza in Rome. The lifeblood of the national capital, piazze offer matchless perspectives on the ancient city’s history, majesty and aesthetic...
After a long silence, due to the crescendo of my workload and a trip to Toronto for the film festival, I am back. As I write this from my oceanview room at Finch Bay Eco Hotel in the Galapagos, I am so grateful for my job. Truly am. To have once-in-a-lifetime experiences on a regular...
A few years ago, I wrote a poem about my old country, Yugoslavia (read below). That was my way of dealing with the collapse of my homeland, on an emotional creative level. But until a few days ago, I never publicly expressed my views on what happened back home in the 1990s, and how I...
In this week's guest post, we take a dip in the Black Sea of Bulgaria, at a string of beach resorts in the country's north. Taking us there is Katya of Great Places in Bulgaria. NORTH ALONG BULGARIA'S SEASIDE I said goodbye to noisy resorts five years ago. They are just not right for me...
I arrived back from Croatia on July 28. I took two days off, to settle back in after a six-week absence from home. Since then, I haven't had a day off. Every single morning, I sit at my desk, turn on the computer and work on the Croatia guidebook that now occupies 90% of my...
